Lamont Young

Biography

Programming music is one of Lamont's greatest pleasures and joys in life. From the time he was given his first "Close & Play" record player, Lamont was hooked on music! Lamont feels DJing is one of his purist means of communication. As a native of waterbury,Connecticut, Lamont was most influenced by house parties his family would host throughout the years. From birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, summertime gatherings, and even funerals, Lamont's family always knew hot to get their groove on!

Today as Music Director of Mecca Restaurant @ Bar in San Francisco, Lamont has redefined his role as not only a DJ but as a man that makes people feel good. "I have come to realize the great influence that music has over people, and in my DJing, I try to select music that evokes all emotions."

Collecting music is a life long journey and commitment for Lamont. He has been out and about for over 21 years in search of the perfect beat. The music in his library is vast and wide with any and almost every genre imaginable. However, dance music is why he is in the music game in the first place. "I listen to all types of music and I love the energy that dance music gives me. I like to move, and dance music is a wonderful natural aid in doing so. I have found that dance has shaped my mind and changed my outlook on life in some unbelievable ways. And because of the emotion that is expressed in the making of deep house, dance music along with its realistic lyrical content, I have used dance as a moral compass."

Seeing my audience reaction to a song is a spiritual and spine chilling experience. Knowing that I am playing a song that has inspired a person's entire being to move is an incredible feeling. Being able to understand what a group of party seekers want and need for the evening takes great insight, trust, and instinct.

Lamont still gets several laughs from many of his peers when they discover he worked with a "New Country" radio station for three years. Lamont's response to this is, "I love the music and I love the art of radio. I felt once I understood the art of radio, I would be able to apply that knowledge to any musical format." Straight out of college radio into his first professional on-air gig, Lamont had the opportunity to work on a Classic Jazz & Big Band radio station.

"Radio is yet another reason why I am in this business of music. When I was a kid, radio and DJs played a major role in my life. When no one else was around, a click on the knob and out came a voice and a song that gave me instant comfort in my hour of need."

"Working and living in San Francisco has opened my mind to the multi-cultural world of food, art, wine and music. I use all of the different walks of life in the Bay as an inspiration to do the work that I do at Mecca plus the various special events and nightclubs in the city."

Starting in the fall 2002, Lamont, Ashley Allen and Chris Harris have been collaborating in their studios producing and arranging dance music. The first single is due this spring of 2003.
